Subject Mastery

Mastering academic pursuits involving three components:

Skill Repetition

Playing a piano piece is impossible if one needs to worry about where the notes are.  Similarly, for maths and sciences, one cannot engage in meaningful problem solving if the basic skills aren’t down cold.  Basic skills must be practiced, over, and over, until one can “do without thinking”.  This enables our creativity to flow without being impeded by minor, but all-important, intermediary steps.

Practice Solving Problems

The key to success in the maths and sciences is doing problems.  How many times have you sat in a classroom, understanding every word the teacher says, only to come up completely blank when it comes time to actually solve the problem?  A very familiar scenario for students:
One cannot listen and learn, one must do and learn.
